Armani Murphy, youth organizer and promoter, interviews Gums De Uno, host and performer of the 8th Annual We Are Hip Hop Festival. Turns out, we got a few unexpected answers to our questions. Have fun readin’ it!
What made you interested in performing for the We Are Hip Hop Festival?
I became interested in We Are Hip Hop a few years ago when I saw another Pilsen emcee performing it inspired me to be apart of the show and entertain my community. Also, as a native of the Pilsen neighborhood, We Are Hip Hop recognizes the different Hip Hop elements; graffiti, dance, and music & I want my name to be recognized in these categories.
What can you take from your experience of performing at the We Are Hip Hop Festival?
Many things can be taken from this event but two main things that stick out to me are the on stage performance experience as well as additional followers of my music.
If you could do anything differently in your career, what would it be?
I wish I possessed a home studio and I wish I could work with Lauryn Hill.
What artists inspire you to keep moving forward in your career?
Overall J-Def is one of my main inspirations. He motivated me to be different and as creative as possible. Artists with vision and originality motivate me. I like to step out of my comfort zones and I believe being versatile is a great attribute.
(Here are two crazy questions we wanted to ask to make the interview fun)
What is the last song you sang in the shower?
Peanut Butter Jelly Time! It’s a routine.
If you could be any superhero who would it be and why?
Batman, because I’ve always wanted an underground lair with extremely dope whips and body armor.
